The Nissan Frontier range is a range of pickup trucks which are well sized, very versatile and affordably priced. The truck is currently in its second generation and the latest version is a little larger than the previous one. There is a good range of body options which adds to the overall versatility of this vehicle and means that it has a wide spectrum of owners.
There is an extended cab and a crew-cab model along with gvarious levels of trim. The lowest cost is the S, and there is the more luxurious SV. These come with a 2.5 litre four-cylinder engine which develops 152 bhp and a five-speed manual gearbox is standard and a five speed automatic is available as an option. The Pro-4X is a ruggedised model and the top of the range is the SL. These come with a 4 litre V6 petrol engine which develops 261 bhp.
The appearance of the car does belie how well it handles. It feels quite pacey (especially with the V6 engine) and it is manoeuvrable and easy to drive. Visibility is good too. There has been some criticism of the comfort levels in the rear, but with this style of truck that goes with the territory. There is an optional ‘technology package’ which includes Bluetooth and an improved audio system.
Overall the Frontier is fun to drive and own. It will deal with most things thrown at it and it is as good as a work vehicle hauling such things as building materials as it is a family recreational vehicle carrying your jet ski and diving equipment. The Frontier is built to last and both the body and the mechanical components have been engineered to withstand abuse.
A new Frontier will be launched in 2012. The engine line-up is as the current models though there are a number of refinements.
